Known as the deadliest fashion disaster in modern times, the Rana Plaza incident of 2013 was a catastrophe in which an eight-story building housing five garment factories that were supplying international brands collapsed, killing more than 1,100 garment production workers in Savar Upazilla (Dhaka District), Bangladesh. The collapse of Rana Plaza incited a wave of workplace safety legislation regarding the textile and apparel industry. In this case study, an analysis of the change achieved in relation to workplace safety in Bangladesh following the Rana Plaza controversy through industry-sponsored initiatives (the Accord and the Alliance) is discussed, as well as the safety measures that companies enact that promote responsible sourcing. Students are asked to take the role of a sourcing manager for a fashion company in deciding about sourcing production in Bangladesh. This case study will promote dialogue about the challenges and opportunities of sourcing in Bangladesh and strategies fashion companies use in assuring workplace safety.
