Hi! My name is Luis Quijano and I am a Designer-Scientist and Fulbright Future Scholar. My work lies at the cutting edge of fashion biotechnology, material science and sustainability. I hold a Ph.D. in Fashion Design from Queensland University of Technology in Australia and a B.Sc. in Fashion Design with minors in Business and Chinese from Liberty University in the United States. Originally from Puerto Rico and now operating globally (Australia, United States, China, Thailand), my journey has been marked by a commitment to interdisciplinary exploration and cross-cultural collaboration. I am an early-career researcher who aims to redefine the future of materials innovation in the fashion industry through my research emerging bio-based materials and technologies.  My PhD research focused on developing and applying bacterial cellulose as a sustainable material for the fashion industry. My current projects explore how biotechnology can offer alternatives to traditional textiles and technology through cross-disciplinary collaborations by reducing the industry’s environmental footprint, creating innovative, high-performance materials. I am particularly interested in bridging the worlds of design and science—an approach I call the “designer-scientist” mindset. This mindset has positioned me as a trailblazer in academic and industrial settings.
